Draco centric HBP rambling part1

I've been delaying to write my own little review(ish) post on HBP, because what more can you say after reading an immensely satisfying book that validated your every extrapolation and speculation on your favorite characters, one of them given more page space and spotlight than you could ever dream of, then reading a couple of other people's reviews ( Read more... )

Loved this essay.

For Draco's future in book 7, I am both hopeful and worried. Rowling had brought him to a position at which it's equally likely and logical for Draco to choose either side, and who knows there might even be a third path that Rowling would shock us with! For the Draco-choosing-the-dark-side scenario, well the fact Draco and his parents' lives are still in Voldemort's hand, the light side now considers him a DE, and he sure as hell can't trust Snape who'd finished off Dumbledore in front of Draco's eyes (from the description of Snape grabbing and forcing Draco out of the door to the tower I gather Draco was in a state of shock) should be enough reasons for him to stay where he is- Voldemort's unwilling pawn. As for Draco choosing the light side, I think the biggest argument for this scenario is Dumbledore's mercy and sarcrifice- of course Dumbledore did not sarcrifice his own life only to save Draco, but I have no doubt his death and the last words he spoke to Draco would leave a firm imprint on Draco's conscience. I wouldn't be surprised if Harry ends up saving Draco's life -or maybe the other way around, and we'll have the James and Snape parallel to its full circle.

The interesting thing about this is, Harry himself was making the parallel! In HBP Harry's last thought on Draco was that, while he still despised Malfoy for his infatuation with Dark Arts blah blah- excuse me?! I had to stop and reread that line, because hell, Harry could've come up at least two dozens reasons for still despising Draco, for example how about Draco's part in Dumbledore's death??? Even though yeah, Harry seemed to have forgiven him for that, it seemed a bit too easy really but oh well. Anyway my point is, Harry's stated reason for despising Draco is now the same as James's official reason, not even a subtle move toward bringing the parallel to light, methinks.

Yes, I thought that was a little strange (considering their long history of animosity and that...um, Harry's not exactly uninterested in the Dark Arts himself) so I guess it's a pretty heavy-handed hint. Not that I'm complaining, since it's all Draco development and all...

I know, I was like okay, even if Harry was williing to overlook the part where Draco introduced bunch of DEs into the castle and wrecked havok, what about those past five years when he thought Malfoy was such a jerk/bully/Dudley in WW? Well, if the author herself wants to white-wash Draco, certainly it's not in my interest to complain. Same goes to her stating Draco's talent in Occulumency, I think it's a stretch but hey, if JK says he's good then I guess he's good?

HBP was so a grand evil plan to confuse and split the Draco fans X-D

i was a little teary when i read OotP, when black 'died' - i was a little upset, like most fans... but i was... but my eyes were welled with tears quite a few times while reading HBP - due to bitter-happiness for draco and snape... and i got teary again reading your essay - for so many well said points, and voicing some of my own thoughts for HBP... and yes, i'm still too emotionally overwhelmed to say anything coherent...

i could just say CoS used to be my fav... now it's second to HBP...

Hey... Wow... I never thought anything I write can bring anyone close to tears (except for tears of anger, perhaps). Glad you agree with some of my points :-)

HBP is by far my favorite among the series, I tremble at the exciting anticipation for book 7 to outdo even the six in its glory, but no matter how great book 7 might turn out to be, HBP will have this special place in my heart forever!

because what more can you say

Quite a lot, as it turns out, and riveting stuff too.

But yes, I´m also still trying to wrap my head around the fact that our boy has got his own arc. But you´re right, of course-while his altered role in the series was a fantastic surprise, it remains rooted in previous books. Thanks for pointing out all the CoS connections, I completely missed some of them.

, while Crabbe and Goyle? They later on proved themselves to be Draco's loyal friends instead of cronies.

Loyal friends, and then some! After they agreed to BE LITTLE GIRLS on a regular basis, a new term needs to be invented for them.

On the subject of his future, I´m like you: torn between cautious hope and blind fear. But it would make Dumbledore´s sacrifice even more meaningful if it succeeded in preventing Draco from joining the Dark Side.

2. Draco again turned into Snape in Harry's dream, though this time he turned into Slughorn first :-PI KNOW11!!!11 ( ... )

It's really funny. Whenever I begin a post with 'wow I don't know what to say!' I end up having a verbal diarrhea, while I usually follow up an ambitious introduction promising great in-depth essay with a feeble, lame sentence or two. I am my own bane in my life, so it seems.

Loyal friends, and then some! After they agreed to BE LITTLE GIRLS on a regular basis, a new term needs to be invented for them.

But I don't know what would be remotely adequate to honor what they did! I mean, undergoing sex-changes for a lousy friend who doesn't even tell you what the fuck the image-suicide was for!!!

And I regardless of what the significance may be, it seems to confirm their fates will continue to be linked...I don´t know if it also means their eventual fate will be the same. OMG, I´m gonna have a heart attack with book 7, aren´t I?

*weebles*
I was thinking maybe I should get myself properly braced with spoilers on the eve of book 7, but then I suspect even the spoilers have enough power to give me a stroke ( ... )
