What a fun concept! Catwoman would make a more compelling--and in character--Lady Macbeth, although having Superman and Wolverine as the only figures strictly outside of Batman's cast might be too unbalanced.
wolverine especially, i think ... a bit of a stretch. looking for a righteous-vengeance character. Batman would be a good choice for Macduff, but who does that leave for Macbeth.
As for Superman, know what you mean. But I'm not so much thinking a Macbeth metaphor within a Gotham City world so much as a reimagining of the relationships between the characters -- different twists on them, different ways to communicate the relationships and the significance of the characters to, perhaps, an audience potentially largely unfamiliar with Shakespeare.
if you can think of a Batman-safe character for King Duncan, let me know. But Something about Superman as the king immediately communicates Goodness, and Rightness, and Wholsomeness -- and to fucking kill Superman would affect a lot of people more than seeing some old dude in a crown and robe get killed. You don't care about some old guy as much as you do Superman.
Same thing with Robin -- a good choice, I think, because we know that Robin and Batman are best buds, that Robin would die
