Salene and Amber :Market :A Crowd Gathers

Oct 21, 2003 04:56

Salene smiled as Amber entered her room and headed downstairs with her, right out of the mall, into the street. She walked firmly and with purpose. Her mind drifted to something Amber had said back when she'd offered to come with her, "Where...is Bray, anyway? Did he head down to the market?" Having some Mallrats already there would certainly be a ( Read more... )

Amber paused for thought, she didn;t want to get worried about Bray, but she shouldn't hide anything from Salene. "He's gone off to sort a few things out. He says that before we can get married, there are certain demons that may come back to haunt him, and he wants to make sure that won't happen. I'm really worried about him, but you know what he's like. Guess I'm just going to have to have faith in him. I was so scared earlier, when I heard that scream, I thought something had happened to Bray, and then I saw the rail, and I thought it had happened to him, just like his brother . . . " Amber sighed. "But, it wasn't, and now we have more pressing things to worry about." She smiled with a determined expression on her face. "What's the plan? Negotiate with the traders?"

"Wait, whoa, you two are getting married?" Salene had missed so much today between her tummyache and her meetings and city business. "I am so happy for you two, congrats," she said sweetly, a big smile on her face, that was something good, and they needed more good on a day such as this. Then her mind finally registered what Amber was saying, "Demons?" and her face got serious as she mentioned his brother and the scream and the railing, "That must have been terrifying, I'm sorry," she said softly, then nodded when she said they had more pressing things to worry about. This much was true, "I don't know," she said with a slight nervous laugh. "I suppose go there and find out what's going on. I hear that the VR addicts are running the farmers out of town, some won't even come down anymore, and you know when that happens we don't get food and things just get worse," Salene said with a sigh. "I suppose when we get there, I'll just, go where the urge takes me, but I'm hoping to talk with some of the traders, farmers, find out directly from ( ... )

"Good plan." Amber said, starting to feel nervous as they approached the market. "I just hope they realise we're here to help, and not to try and take over. A lot of people out here have a grudge against the Mall Rats, and it's only cos we're the only ones who can be bothered to do anything to improve city life." Amber sighed. "I dunno, sometimes it feels like no matter what we do we're the bad guys, but I guess I'd rather be a bad guy with a clean conscience." Amber smiled.

Salene nodded, agreeing, "Exactly, if being bad means doing good, then I'd rather be the bad guy anyday," although, truly, she'd like to be liked, loved even, but she knew by now that wasn't going to happen. Whatever people hated about them was their problem, except when it was hers and they were taking out on the sheriff, or one of their own. She stopped as they reached the traders market and a small group of people saw them and started instantly talking, inundating her with information, complaints, questions, what was she going to do? Who was going to keep them safe if their sheriff was being beaten up by these Vid Heads? Salene glanced at Amber, a look of 'here goes' crossing her face, and she held her hands up and spoke loudly, "I say we have to protect each other! Listen to me! If you want to help fight this war, you need to join the militia! Join up with us!" Some laughed, someone called out 'Who the MallRats?! Can't keep your own safe!' and she got a serious look on her face. "Look, come on now! Either you are part of the ( ... )
