What's with tampon/pad brands ending in "x"? Kotex...Playtex...Tampax...One was the original and the others wanted to imitate?

Tampon Timeline

1920 - Kotex enters the market. It takes its name from a combination of the words "cotton" and "texture." Presumably because of its cotton texture.

1932 - Enter Playtex. Developed by a company that specialized in "latex" products.

1936 - And finally Tampax. I couldn't find an explanation for this one. Your theory is probably the right one. "Everyone else was doing it."

This information provided by kotex.com, playtex.com and tampax.com. See these sites for information on how to choose a tampon, how to insert a tampon and when to remove a tampon.

Very interesting. Kotex and Playtex were both original at least.

Okay, that was way too "wikipedia-esque".

I was thinking more along the lines of "X marks the spot" or at least where you spot at the beginning and end of the period. True, during the heavy flow part the phrase "X marks the stain" would be more appropriate, however, that phrase has not achieved the pop culture status of "X marks the spot." But that's probably because no one wants to think about bloody uterus lining when they're treasure hunting. Duh!

Or cuz X is mysterious? And most women like to be discrete about their mestrual cycles? I have not really heard of X marks the spot...but x marks the stain is pretty funny.
