As far as the progression, you can find plenty of websites and books with kanji by grade level. As far as vocabulary, that's a little more difficult to classify. By and large the progression isn't too terribly difficult in a kokugo class than you see in a lot of books, but as far as vocabulary and grammar, that's more difficult to classify. Typically the format you see presented in books to help English learners learn Japanese is structured to make the most sense to a speaker of English, because there isn't a strict outline in Japanese (Other than Kanji). Can you, for example, give a similar progression of vocabulary and grammar in English that's standardized?
If there is a Japanese bookstore near you (Asahiya/Kinokuniya etc), try to find Japanese learning books made from Japanese people. I've found those to be much more useful than the one you find in regular US bookstores.
College textbooks from Japanese courses I was enrolled in helped a lot for me as well.
I'll tell you how it can be useful immediately. Assuming you got through the beginning of Spectral Souls 2, the crappy character(I forgot his name。He looks Caucasian, and is gone very quickly) says in the beginning, 目と鼻の先です.
The college textbook we used sucked horribly. I ordered a copy of Genki 2 because I heard it covers second year a lot better than my textbook, which will be a nice review.
Definitely going to order that idioms book.
Also been looking into books that cover JLPT 2-4 as well as flashcards. I think I'll place a large order from a bookstore soon.
