I need to move. Soon. Very very soon.

Dearest Friends,

If any of you decide to move to SF, I would like to offer some advice.

Firstly, do not rely on a few people and their opinion of the safety of a neighborhood, especially if they don't actually live in SF.

Secondly, do combine search terms such as : X neighborhood + shootings + gang violence + "your general run-of-the-mill (you can ( Read more... )

hrm...is it just me or has gang violence skyrocketed since I was last there? You also seem very privy to the gang activity that occurs around your hood. I'm not too sure how I'd feel about that kind of awareness. I mean, yeah, I recall hearing about a shooting at the Popeye on Mission and 16th or 24th when I lived in SF. As for the 'loin, I got the impression that it wasn't so much a problem the coupla times I went there, since 3/4 of the student population from the Academy of Art seem to live there. I also thought that the Western Addition was fully gentrified by now (as well as the Mission). Of course, this then creates the dilemma as to whether one would prefer having fair housing restrictions or being soothed to sleep to a soundtrack of people getting killed below your flat.

Gentrification with the Mission stops around 18th street (and I'm not sure if it will actually succeed much farther at this point, ha ha). Gang murders are down this year, but there are plenty of non-fatal gang incidents within a five block radius of my pad. Of course, I'm probably not going to be a target, but it's still unsettling. Stabbings have become a big issue in the tenderloin. There are two feuding gangs in the Western Addition, despite gentrification. SF is going to have it's highest murder rate in ten years this year, so there are some definite issues (which I hear is partially due to an aging police force/lack of police, if you want to believe that). Apparently though, 43% of all murders this year have occurred in Ingleside and Bayview.
