The beginning of a new school year is always exciting for high school students. It is a time for new classes, different experiences, and a chance to make the new year even better than the last.

This 2005 school year is extra special for the students at Gabriel Richard High School. Gabriel Richard is celebrating 40 years of Catholic High School Education, and this year’s Homecoming festivities kicked off the landmark year on a high note.

Homecoming week started off with the Homecoming Court nominations, and continued with an all school mass honoring Richard’s traditions and welcoming back alumni. I was honored to be one of the five girls chosen from my senior class to be on the Homecoming court, which made the week even more memorable.

Throughout Homecoming week, Gabriel Richard was full of vivacious spirit. During the Homecoming assembly, the court, escorted by their parents, was presented to the school. The assembly is also a time when the students, grades 9 through 12 competed in a dance competition.

All of the students gave a very good show, but the Junior class shined above their peers with their excellent rendition of favorite eighties hits, such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, which brought them to victory. The Homecoming assembly left the student body excited and ready for the football game against Richard’s arch rivals , the Monarchs of St. Frances Cabrini.

The football game resulted in a victorious win for the Pioneers. As alumni came back to their old stomping grounds and previous Homecoming Kings and Queens crowned the 2005 Royalty, magic was in the air.

The exciting win brought an enormous wave of school spirit as the football team rang the Victory Bell in front of the school. The celebrations had begun.

The Homecoming game ended with a big bang, literally. To commemorate Gabriel Richard’s 40 years of excellence, there was a display of fireworks after the game. The fireworks were almost as spectacular as Gabriel Richard itself.

Homecoming week is not just about football games and dances. It is an opportunity for past generations to come together and form community.

The fact that so many people who both attend Gabriel Richard, and who have graduated in previous years came back to celebrate during homecoming is a perfect example of how Gabriel Richard shines in the educational community. Through its superb education and positive atmosphere Gabriel Richard has thrived for 40 years, and will continue this tradition for many years to come.

The word Homecoming literally means “ a coming home”. And that is just what Gabriel Richard is, a home for all of it’s students, past present and future.
