The car thing will suck, but I'm sure you can find somebody to help you out. Or, in a pinch, rent a car/truck for a day or 2 to get stuff done. You could start apartment hunting on craigslist now to find out what you're up against. The nice thing about a college town is, even if you end up in a place you hate, new places will open up at the end of the semester. Maybe you should think about bugeting some money to spend a week or 2 at a cheap hotel. You managed to do very well in a country where you didn't speak the language. I'm sure you'll do fine in RI.

I've been searching Craigslist already. Real estate in RI is plentiful, so I'm not worried about that. I will need to search again closer to the time because most listings now are "available at the beginning of June" and I can only assume will not be held for me to come check them out in August. I have offers from people out there to stay with them while I apartment hunt, so that's no problem.

True, I came to Japan without much of anything and did fine, but it was less of a necessity to be moved in right away then (I'd like to have my place in some semblance of order so that I can focus on my classes straightaway). Also, they deliver everything.

When my brother started grad school, he had a car and figured a great way to meet people, and that people would need the same things he did. He sent out an email on the listserv asking if anyone wanted to go to Target, Ikea, etc. That could very well happen with you.
