I think it's easier to live as a character because everything is clearly defined. Characters have specific problems to overcome, and by the end everyone is either living happily ever after or dead, which wraps things up nicely. To be oneself is to deal with the uncertainty and failure of real life. "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." You struggle to find a place in the theatre; in a year and a half I'll (hopefully) have a degree in a profession that works almost exclusively in freelance work. Everyone has bouts of depression and it's as normal to fell negative emotions as it is positive ones, though if it continues for a very long period of time, you may want to take your Mom's advice. (Counseling helped me a great deal.) Others will be petty and cruel and hypocritical, but the only thing you can control is your own actions. Don't give up entirely on good deeds, as they are not always rewarded with pain.
