Why I go to class and eat food.

Skimming my past few entries has made me realize that if one were to formulate an opinion of me based solely on said entries, one might assume that I hate everything. This is simply not true. The only things that I really, truly, honestly hate, besides the musical Grease, are starlets.

I recently happened upon a VH1 special about "The Fabulous Life of Young, Hot Hollywood", a.k.a. "How Today's Useless, Absurdly Rich, Immature Celebrities Spend Their Undeserved Money". At the point at which I began watching, the program was describing the THREE Beverly Hills mansions owned by twentysomething-year-old Frankie Muniz.

Not that I don't think Frankie Muniz is swell, but...does a kid barely out of his teens REALLY NEED three mansions in Beverly Hills? Does anyone else think it's a little extravagant for Paris Hilton to shell out $20,000 for a shopping spree on Rodeo Drive? AM I THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO TAKES OFFENSE TO HILARY DUFF'S GIANT TEETH?

It's one thing for a person to work hard: to get an education, to make it big by providing some service or product built upon their own talent or perseverence. I applaud those people and believe that they have every right to spend their money on luxury. But it's a completely different story when some young idiot either wallows in their family money (think Paris Hilton) or hams it up in some moronic teen movies that no one actually watches (think Hilary Duff) or sells crappy records even though they can't carry a tune in a bucket (think Ashlee Simpson). Yet these are the kinds of people who make enough money to finance the most absurdly extravagant lifestyles, rife with glossy photo shoots and couture. What kind of world do we live in, that Hilary Duff with her enormous teeth and complete DEARTH OF TALENT is worth more than the chief of surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital? Ask yourselves: has Hilary Duff made anyone's life any better? Has she contributed ANYTHING worthwhile to the universe? No. She's just some moronic pretty face (and I use the term "pretty" very loosely here).

Don't get me wrong. I love actors and musicians. Good ones, that is. Today's starlets are remarkably untalented and useless. Let's look at the lineup: Mischa Barton? Sucks. Lindsay Lohan? Sucks. Jessica Simpson? Sucks. Nicole Ritchie? I don't even know what the fuck she DOES. How about the boys? Wilmer Valderamma? Sucks. Justin Timberlake? Sucks. The only young, famous actor who I think is worth a damn right now is Jake Gylenhaal, and I have yet to hear about any sordid scandals involving him and a sex tape.

Are these people really so starved for attention? I don't follow celebrity gossip, and even I can't escape the tales of these starlets' escapades. No trip to the supermarket is complete without spotting at least twelve magazine covers flaunting Lindsay Lohan's slutty, anorexic body and a headline about some weak-chinned young heir with whom she's smoking crack. What in the hell makes these people worthy of our attention? What glorious deeds have they accomplished, to justify their placement upon some pedestal of American society?

Okay, okay, so people think they're cute. Some poor, soulless bastards actually listen to their music or watch their movies and/or TV shows. Fine. But please, don't even get me started on Paris Hilton. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT SHE DOESN'T DO SHIT. Why in God's green Earth is this bitch famous? She's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. According to the VH1 program, she walked out of a boutique in L.A. with "like, fifty dresses", having spent over $100,000. In one shopping trip. For herself. She hasn't worked a day in her life, and she spends that kind of money on clothes for herself. Justice, anyone? DONATE SOME OF YOUR FAMILY'S FUCKING MONEY TO AFRICA OR SOMETHING, BITCH. I understand that some starlets hit it big in show-biz and squander their money on frivolous things, but at least they DID something to get that money. Paris Hilton parties every night of the week, does some idiotic reality show, gets drunk, fucks around, poses for the paparazzi, and then probably barfs up her food. OH BOY, WHAT A ROLE MODEL. I WOULD REALLY WANT MY KIDS TO LOOK UP TO HER. And yet, she has the money to spend $100,000 on a single shopping spree.

If you ever make that much money, GOOD FOR YOU. I really don't care how people spend their money. However, I find it beyond disgusting that the so-called "young Hollywood" is so tacky and gauche that they spend their undeserved millions on luxury cars and clothes and jewelry and expensive nights on the town when there are people in this world who have NOTHING. People who work hard every day of their lives and still have NOTHING. Are we supposed to learn something from this? That the way to live the "good life"--a life where you wake up at noon, have a leisurely lunch at a trendy cafe, shop on Rodeo Drive, dine at a fancy restaurant, and dance the night away--is to capitalize on humanity's most base sense of superficiality? To sell out to sensationalism and crappy pop music? To leech on your family's fortune?

How is that fulfilling?

Call me old-fashioned, but I believe that we each get one life to live and it's therefore incumbent upon us to make it worthwhile: to get an education, to pursue a dream, to improve your world. Living like an expensive, talentless parasite is NOT fabulous, nor glamorous--it's completely disgusting. These people aren't any better than the rest of us. They are not smarter, more talented, or more beautiful. By some bizarre twist of fate, they've ended up in a position that allows them to live a life that for some reason, other people covet. I personally would hate to live their lives, but there you go: I value education, hard work, and sophistication, none of which are important to today's starlets.

What kills me about this is that there are people around my age who actually idolize the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.

And that thought is almost as terrifying as Hilary Duff's ENORMOUS teeth.
