Quote: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, This Year's Girl (4x15)

WILLOW
Walking around, "ooh, check me out, I'm wicked cool, I'm five-by-five."

TARA
"Five-by-five?" Five what by five what?

WILLOW
See, that's the thing. No-one knows.

The First Evil is always present, always looming, always watching. And is very amused at the conversation between two naive girls taking place on a beautiful January day in the year 2000. Sensing so much raw magical power coming from the redheaded Wicca, the First is amazed how so much power could be in one so young.

Yet the First feels more than just power in Willow Rosenberg. It feels a good deal of itself in her. It feels that green eyed monster called jealousy. Despite all the untapped power she has yet to master or unleash upon the world. Her jealousy and hatred of Faith Lehane flows far too easily for one claiming to be a good girl. She feels that she doesn't measure up. Faith is a Slayer. So much strength, so much power. Faith is beautiful...buxom...brash... does what she wants... takes what she wants. Faith is everything awkward, geeky, weak Willow envy's. Just as she envies her best friend Buffy's power as Vampire Slayer. She questions why should Buffy or Faith be more powerful than her. Why should she be the nerdy sidekick that never gets the attention or appreciation she deserves. Why can't she be seen as cool. Why can't she have fun, and not be a stick in the mud. The girl has so many dark cravings just waiting to be unleashed upon the world.

If the foolish mortals could look beyond the surface, they'd see that they are all the same. None of them are five-by-five as Faith would say. None of them will ever be all right or as happy as they want to be. All of them are far too scared and far too lost. All trying so desperately hard to connect, to find acceptance and love in a dark, dismal, and oh so very lonely world.

As the First looks away from Willow and Tara's little cry baby session. Oh Faith is bad, she may hurt our friends, and there is nothing we can do to help, for we aren't powerful enough. Boo-hoo, whatever. The First decides to take a quick glimpse elsewhere, and see's Willow's first love Xander Harris and Buffy's Watcher Giles searching unsuccessfully all over Sunnydale for the rogue Slayer Faith; Xander is thinking about when he lost his virginity to Faith, and that makes the First realize that some of Willows jealousy may come from that little tasty fact. Old Giles on the other hand is feeling like he let Faith down. She needed a far more experienced Watcher than a book worm like Wesley Wyndam-Pryce; Maybe he could have helped her if he hadn't been so depressed about being fired from the Watcher's Council... or feeling like Buffy didn't need him anymore.

Both Xander and Rupert are feeling useless and powerless to help the girl they love; and the First watches on with much amusement as Spike, so upset by Buffy's friends constant hostility towards him, in his own words tells them to piss off.

The Slayer and all her misguided friends will never find what they seek, so long as they hate one another. So long as they doubt each others capacity to love and help one another. If they fail to pull each other back from the dark paths they each walk, the world is doomed. Pity, forgiveness, friendship, love, that is the only things that can save them from the darkness. But they are far to lost to see the way. And that knowledge makes the First feel five-by-five.
