I love trying to read that story out loud. Too bad it's racist or I'd read it to my kids. I don't want to have to use the above quote in their defense one day. :P

I absolutely LOVED song of the south as a kid. I read that book over and over again. It is definitely a slice of the unenlightned past. But these political apologies are NOT apologies. I'm sorry if anyone was offended????? OMG. How about, "I am deeply sorry that, in my ignorance, I used a term that is offensive to many people." Or possibly, "It grieves me deeply to have caused pain for so many people by using a term that is offensive. I had no knowledge of its shameful history as a racist epithet, and I deeply regret my ignorance." Have some ovaries and deliver a realy apology, man.

Now I'm annoyed.
