Hand Quacks are pretty clever these days, rehabilitation and what not should be in top priority for you.
Kick up a fuss with the doctors when you get back to get them to find you the best rehab advice possible - as you said your hands are your livelihood (when my bro broke his finger, spiral fracture and split down the middle, he may have not had quite the surgical and rehabilitation effort he got if he didn't list of a myriad of things (some not entirely true) that he needed full mobility in his hands for.
I've been pretty adamant all along - with the A&E people, the assessor from plastics, the surgeons...
I think if I hadn't made a fuss they might not have operated, since it was my left hand. It was only when I told them I played the guitar that they agreed to go ahead. Stupid! I told them I was a sculptor, which should have been enough. "Most people don't use those fingers." "Well I do." "They're not very important." "I'm a puppeteer." "That's a cool job." "I need them." "the tendon's fine." "I play the guitar" "Ooooh, okay. You might need surgery then."
Doctors these days try to avoid surgery if it is possible due to infection and anesthetic risks. You do have to hassle doctors sometimes if you want something done or not done.
Choice is ultimately the patients and they have to respect your wishes.
