Monsters that talk, monsters that walk the earth

I drafted a seven piece corset pattern for myself. I'm pretty happy with it, but it's hard to tell what the final fit of a corset will be like until it's more or less finished, so we'll see. The plan is that I make a corset, or possibly two, out of denim. Denim is way more durable and washable than the velvet, brocade, and satins that my other ( Read more... )

Here's a more final cut of the song - pretty much done, except no piano part.

mua ha ha. perhaps our evil plan to tempt you to stay at sherbrook more often during the semester has worked!

that is, by giving you ample space to do the work that consumes your soul. i likes it when the people i live with spend time at home

I'm curious. You chose denim partially because it is washable. Do you plan to wash the completed corset at some point, and if so, what are you boning it with?

Yes. Cable ties (or, more specifically, duct ties, which are like cable ties but scaled up about five times in each direction; I tried to find a picture but lowes.com sucks) are what I always use-- they're cheaper, easier to buy, easier to cut, and slightly less poky than metal, and way stronger than the stuff the fabric stores sell as boning. They are a little thicker in the direction away from the body, but if you're using boning as a design element anyway, it's not a problem. And of course they're not authentic, but I have better things to do with my life than be authentic*, and obviously a 7-piece made out of denim is not going to be authentic for anything anyway ( ... )

So Lauren, you have succesfully convinced me to start sewing stuff. I mean I'm not any good at it and I have no idea what I'm doing, but I do...

Win! I suggest obtaining the oldest sewing book you can find; the directions are always the best in those. Actually, right around the 1940s and 50s is the best, because the advice, while still useful and geared toward making actual things, instead of the endless pillowcases and curtains modern sewing books are all about, is simpler to accomodate the "modern women," who goes to college and didn't necessarily have a lifetime of sewing observation to draw upon. The spirit is much more, "you should learn to sew because it's super useful and economical" than the older books ("you must learn to sew") or the newer books ("you're too dumb to learn to sew real things, sew some squares instead").

wow... i always admired ur skill and grace in sewing... but seven layers shoots over the scale...

thanks.

ps: my sewing project that i wanted to do for over a year, is further on ice... sadly.
pps: the pledge we three beach people made last year is not forgotten yet... however mine proves to be more difficult than i thought.
