One of the bigger risk factors for melanoma is severe sunburns as a kid. Given that you are from australia it is of concern. However, it's very good that you are going to a dermatologist. Dermatologists say that lesions which are smaller than the size of a eraser on the top of pencil is less worrisome. However, I think you are absolutely right in going in to have it evaluated. I think it is bigger than a pencil eraser.
