My suggestion is to look at a couple photographers in your area and kind of get an idea of the average prices. If they're essentially giving away their services ($50-$100 for an hour+, and they'll give you all the photos...), then they're usually either portfolio building or they're not all that confident in their work. The former can be a great thing if you like their overall style

What she said ^^!! Luckily I have a really good friend who takes all my photos. $50 as long as we want as many outfits as we want & the cd with printing rights. I don't know what I'd do without her!! Good luck =)
Look at their portfolio (which they should have), see if you like their style, and check out their Facebook page (if they have one) to see if previous clients of theirs are happy and satisfied. That's pretty much it.
Compare their work to others in the area and see if the prices are similar. Make sure to figure out what exactly you're getting for your money- is the fee just for the shoot itself? do you get a CD with all the images or only a certain number? does the photographer edit the photos? what about a print/share release?
