I've not read it since university but I seem to recall it having something to do with homosexuality?

that would work! in this context i was thinking just of the general sense that sin is an INESCAPABLE COMPONENT OF FALLEN HUMANITY, a PERPETUAL & HORRID COMPANION and so on & so forth. but given the relentless refusal to say what the hell jekyll's shenanigans actually are that are so shameful to him he has to potion himself up a real-life split personality that would be a good fit. clearly i should go and read some of the vast amounts of stuff written about it...

of course, my other theory is that it's actually a farcical tragedy because his Secret Vice that he Cannot Indulge because of his Position is, e.g. betting on skittles or attending (and participating in) really bad slam poetry sessions.
