no family tartan... the standard generic tartan (if I'm not mistaken) ... I wouldn't offend a family by wearing their tartan...

if I ever buy one... the will is there.... now the funds...

You could always get a Utilikilt in the meantime. Sure, they don't come in tartan patterns, but they're good value for money, and darn comfortable too.
