A Brief Rant

May 29, 2006 09:34

This is just a little rant to get some some stuff off my irritated chest.  If any of you are libertarian or this particular sort of libertarian, this will probably offend you.  If that's the case, I apologize but I totally gotta bitch here. That said ( Read more... )

Wow. Sounds like you have some recent personal experience aruguing with Libertarian college students who live with their parents and get financial aid, and aren't good at arguing to boot. (And just read some Ayn Rand, maybe?)

There was a pretty good discussion of #3 on my journal here: http://urbpan.livejournal.com/89375.html

(Though I thought the people who lived in the country got pretty defensive.)

And my thoughts on libertarianism are summed up in this post: http://urbpan.livejournal.com/200024.html which is short enough to print in its entirety in this comment.

Why I'll Never be a Libertarian, Top Five Reasons:

1. Public Transportation
2. Public Libraries
3. Federal, State and especially City Parks
4. Non-profit police and fire departments
5. Public Schools

Excellent reply and reasoning. Thanks for summing it all up so gloriously well.

Excellent sleuthing -- I am indeed dealing with a Libertarian unable to make his own arguments. If the guy were a college student I'd be MUCH more forgiving, but considering the cat is in his mid-30s, my well of sympathy and patience is running pretty dry.

hehe, I've recently been describing myself as "part Green, part Libertarian," but adding "part Socialist" definitely is fitting after reading the above Top Five list. I'm libertarian in the sense that I want the government out of my private life. They're not terribly in it right now, but that's not the point — they shouldn't be. And given what I'm thinking of with the proporsed (LONG OVERDUE) rail link between Madison and Milwaukee, if the above is true, I'm one notch less libertarian. Just call me "European."

4. "Survival of the fittest" is, of course, a phrase Herbert Spencer, inspired by Darwin's "natural selection," coined, only to have it inserted by Darwin hisself in the 5th ed. of the Origin of Species ...

9. Are you actually in any position to say as much to Maher?

10. And again ... else, why worry about it ...

4. Pretty much my point but you rock on with your bad self. Is there anything you're not well versed in? Seriously, you must be insanely intimidating.

9. No, but considering my rant has everything to do with the irritating guy I'm deal with and not Maher that doesn't bother me in the least.

10. Because, like the previous 9 points, they're issues I'm dealing with in regard to a particular person?

4. Insanely Googling. Maybe without the "s" ...

9., 10. Ah, okay, I didn't quite catch that ...

And here I thought we had our own hip Stephen Hawking. Way to break the illusion.
