Okay, so maybe I'm only here because I wanted to bug the manager into hiring me. Or maybe I'm here because I ran out of things to read. It could be either one. Either or.

Or both.

I don't know why I'm so paranoid at the idea of people I know seeing me here. I'm comfortable here. I guess it's because everyone tends to think I'm sort of a ditz... which, I sort of am... so me reading automatically warrants some kind of crap which is sort of indefensible.

I've got an image to uphold or something... shush.

"Hey, Arianna."

Familiar voice.

I jumped a mile, almost dropping the novel I had in my hand, and looked over at who it was. AJ? Alex's ex AJ? AJ, Mr. "I'm a doctor and all that because of it"? What's he doing here?

Oh calm yourself Arianna, it's for books. This is a bookstore. Stop looking a little on the guilty side, you looney. "AJ! Hi." I picked up the book that I did drop, turning back to him. "Long time no see." Smile. Stop wishing Dan was here to protect you from Alex's full-of-himself ex ( ... )

"AJ! Hi. Long time no see."

No kidding. So long I'd almost forgotten her name. Did Alex really expect me to keep all of her friends straight? For crying out loud, I was sleeping with her, not them. Why should I care about remembering their names?

Though having remembered Arianna's might work in my favor.

"Yeah, I know. Guess you heard about the reasons for that," I said with a shrug. That was as close as humility as I was going to get concerning the Alex situation. "Didn't think I'd run into you anytime soon. How are you?"

"Yeah, I know. Guess you heard about the reasons for that,"

"Oh, yes, definitely." A lot. Always from someone, and for a couple of weeks. Was rather odd, for the most part, I've never really seen Carly that pissed a guy who wasn't Sam. And that's really saying something.

"Didn't think I'd run into you anytime soon. How are you?"

"Great." I smiled, trying to be friendly. I think it's working. "Alex is great too." At least she was, once she had a little bit of time to get over you... twit. Intimidating doctor twit. My boyfriend's going to be a lawyer. So there.

"I mean, she's been really busy, but she's great."

"Great. Alex is great too."

Oh really? Hard to believe. I always thought she was the type who would milk the heartbroken act. She did it with everything else. 'No, I can't come over tonight because I'm too tired from working a double-shift. No, you can't sleep over because my sister's here tonight.' Sure, everyone has responsibilities, but she was just using them as excuses.

"I mean, she's been really busy, but she's great."

Does she think that if she keeps saying it, it'll somehow be true? Of course Alex isn't great. Why would she be?

"Really? That's good." Might as well humor her. "I've been trying to call her -- see if maybe she'd like to move on with us being on good terms instead of... you know. She hasn't gotten back to me though. Guess she must be really busy."
