Exactly. I've seen a lot of stories marked Spike/Buffy that are just a conversation, with or without flirting, or attraction. Some just include a moment of cooperation, (which we saw as early as "Becoming 2," when they lied to Buffy's mom together). Some include death threats. You don't know until you read the story.

And if someone wants to write an implausible bit of fluff... so what? One of the great things about fanfic is that you can dabble in the ridiculous.

Like all-penguin AUs.

(Btw, when I said Williamfied Spike, I meant literally... not that I made Spike fluffier, but that Spike got whammied into Williamishness. Though I've seen the other, too.)

Yep, I've written that on more than one occasion, precisely because I can't see a romantic relationship working at that point in the series, but I still like writing about them interacting.

But do you label them as S/B? To me labeling the story like that rather than S&B implies romance.

Yes, I label them as S/B.

As I said above, when I see Spike/Buffy, I assume romance since that the generally accepted meaning of "/". PersonAlly, I use "&" to indicate anything else.

And obviously people can write whatever they like especially since I can pretty much guarantee just about any decently written S/B will get a big audience.
