I used to get that error message (or a similar, shorter version thereof) on my old computer a lot, but that was almost always due to the fact that I had left a floppy disk in the A drive before I'd started it up. =|

As for the violent shaking solving your problems... well, when it comes to computers, nothing surprises me any more. Congrats on fixing it, though! ^^
