In Honor of The Hobbit

I wanted to write up something quick for the Hobbit (which is being released this next month), and I've decided I shall run through some of my favorite characters from Lord of the Rings.  My very first favorite was Legolas (this was pre-films, and mostly related to my love of elves), and I still have a huge soft spot for him, but one day I realized ( Read more... )

What a treat to read some in-depth analysis of my favorite author's characters!

[Eomer] has great swagger

Oh, for sure. Anyone who can shout "Ride! Ride to ruin, and the world's ending!!" has got swagger out the wazoo :D

I loved Faramir all along (Farawyn was one of my first ships), and I hate that so many people think Eowyn would have been better off marrying Aragorn.Oh no, no, no, no, no. Aragorn says it straight out in the books (I can't recall if he says it in the movie), telling her that what she loved wasn't him but what he represented: freedom, self-determination, the ability to control one's own fate. A close reading of the books makes it utterly clear that an Eowyn/Aragorn pairing was a non-starter. I think Faramir is arguably THE most ethical character in the entire series. Merry and Pippin act out of friendship and personal loyalty, Aragorn is following his sense of innate destiny, Sam does what he does out of love, and Frodo would have failed at the bitter end if it weren't for Gollum. Re Arwen - yeah, that's what I thought. (I've only seen the movies once since I don't want someone else's pictures in my head.) It really is too bad, because that extra information so much better explains why she and her father and brothers hate the orcs, and what she's endured. The movie tries to sort of do it by turning her into a sort of Night-Elf Warrior Chick, but that just doesn't cut it for me :/

Thranduil, yes! What with the battle of Dol Guldur and the driving out of the Necromancer etc etc etc. Very interesting individual.

Oh, yes. I quite missed Glorfindel and the twins. And speaking of twins, I know this wasn't really discussed in the LOTR books either and is really only in Silmarillion, but I would've loved to see more on Elrond and his story--I love the whole duality thing with Elrond and Elros, and how it's sort of paralleled in Elrond having twin sons as well (though I would guess that Elladan and Elrohir will probably both choose the same fate, regardless of what it is ( ... )
