I agree with all of the above. You're doing better than me, because it sounds as if you've actually read some gender-swap stories, whereas I never have - I wouldn't want to, for all the reasons you state, and it's not as if I'm short of stuff I do want to read!
I think I'm right in saying that none of the authors I think of as "really good" (or even "pretty good") has ever written gender-switching. Which is very telling.
Ahaha, I think I've accidentally read the beginning of one or two, but mostly it's just based on summaries. And the Iron Woman/Cap thing, which is totally canon but also the one thing I dislike most about Marvel, even if I generally really like them.
You're right, though. I've seen writers who do it who have fairly decent writing skills in the mechanics sense (grammar, spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary) but not as much in the creative sense. Granted, I've seen some awful MarySue fics written by people who actually have good writing mechanics, so that's probably a bad thing to judge on.
Hah, okay, to be fair, I thought the series itself was written in a very juvenile way, and too black and white. So I guess in the case of Harry Potter I'm not so much a whore for canon as a whore for the potential of the canon characters, even partially developed as they are. >.>
But no, I'm not much of a canonwhore for the epilogue, which I felt like was the ultimate cop-out.

Except for the Epilog That Must Not Be Named, though, right?
