Last year, on the Chinese version of The Voice, there was a girl named Jike Juanyi (English stage name Summer) who was from the Yi ethnic group and sang a lot of rocking English songs like "I Feel Good" and "Rolling in the Deep".  She had a really strong voice and was an absolutely lovely person.  In December, Summer released her first single "

I know! I loved her audition--the duality with the Yi traditional song and the rocking "I Feel Good" cover is full of love.

I don't understand why people dislike her. She probably has the strongest voice among female cpop singers right now. And her lyrics aren't all poetic and archaic-sounding, but they're meaningful. I know a lot of people hate the lyric "good thing my skin is so dark" but it actually makes sense and is really being used semi-metaphorically if you look at the context. And yeah, she's not typically pretty, or as pale as all the other stars, and she doesn't do the whispery voice and the sad ballads and the heartbreak, but I can't be the only person who's ready for something new in cpop, right?

This song kept getting stuck in my head ever since it appeared on the YinYueTai rankings. Not complaining, though! xD

I totally love this song. <3 It's actually still #5 on the yinyuetai rankings, which makes me really happy. (Her second single is #1.)

Btw, I told my friend about you, and how you two apparently both write for cfensi. I can't remember her penname there, though. ^^;

Just out of curiosity, what did you think of her second single? It wasn't as catchy, imo, but pretty good nonetheless.

Oh cool, how do you know her? We don't have that many writers, so I probably could pinpoint who it is from a few details, lol.

I actually really like her second single too. It's definitely not as--easy to receive? as the first one, but it's good.

I don't know what she writes about on cfensi, but she likes Yu Quan and Laure Shang. And Hu Ge. But she doesn't like Liu Yifei. (Sorry, I have really random details.) I met her because we worked on fansubbing Qin's Moon together before it got licensed.

I think it's less that it detracts from her, but that the beauty trends in Asia say girls should be pale and delicate, and she's pretty much anything but. And I'm really happy she's transcended that and that she managed to find a company who wouldn't force her to change into the ideal pop star, who let her release a song about being proud of who she is naturally.
