Word. Blackwater is really, really fucked up. I heard about them when I was in New Orleans. Apparently they were used there to supplement the national guard after Katrina and I heard about all kinds of crazy shit that they did. I think they were supposed to be there to help with the evacuation but they ended up being basically a military brute squad to keep people from the lower nineth in the flood zones. I think the most fucked up part about it is, apart from them being a for profit mercenary group, the reason you would hire someone like Blackwater is because they don't necessarily have to follow the Geneva Convention guidelines or any of the "Rules of War." So if you need someone tortured or you need a bunch of civilians killed to make an example, they're the ones you can call so you don't have to answer for it.

It is, it's really frightening. Scahill goes into Blackwater's corporate background and one of the most terrifying thing about this mercenary background is that the CEO of Blackwater has had conversations in the Christian evangelical community about "Christian revolution". It has tons more disturbing stories about how the mercenaries have picked off civilians for target practice AND how recently Blackwater has started outsourcing! - Meaning they're hiring ex military from some of the world's most despotic dictatorships like soldiers from Chile who used to be under General Pinochet are now deployed by Blackwater in Iraq. It's a small number but still, a Catholic study found 30,000 cases of disappearance and torture under Pinochet that they could document!
