In a few short weeks I will be unemployed. My job is being sent to Oklahoma; my co-workers and I have not been invited. I am not unhappy about this, in fact I can't wait. We're getting a severance package (though sadly mine is minimal), I have savings and there is all that unemployment insurance that has been paid on my behalf over the last ten ( Read more... )

Yeah. I completely understand wanting to take the chance to strike out on your own, give more time to your craft and to yourself. Just go easy on the spending.

I'm trying to think about all the different ways to stretch my funds as far as possible. Honestly I don't want another job I want to figure out a way to make a living from my creative abilities selling novels, comic books, etc...and thanks for the encouragement.

We haven't talked in a while. I was wondering how that was going actually?

Sorry about the job loss, but kudos to you for planning ahead & thinking about how to best take care of yourself. May your creative work go well, and good wishes for your future income-generating work.

I got somewhat similar news last week -- my job still exists, but just barely due to budget cuts. You're right -- the unclear parts of the future can indeed seem bright if you've already been pursing other work (creative work, side gig, freelancing, etc.) in your time away from the day job. Such situations test our resilience, but if you're already saving $, living frugally, staying connected to personal & professional communities, etc. it's possible to find oneself up to the challenge.

Good luck!

Thanks Zizi. I'm worried that I'm a little nuts actually. We had the options to try and be placed in other positions in the company or take severance and unemployment. I couldn't imagine taking another position in the company but I know how bad the economy is right now. Still I gotta take that risk, try to make it selling novels and comics books.

Good luck with the job I hope it goes in whatever direction you need it to go in.
