I agree with your assessment of fic. I rarely tell people I'm a fanfic writer or a writer at all because the first thing people say to me is "oh what do you write?" and if I say fanfic they either don't know what that is or they think that I'm one of THOSE FANS and no one likes THOSE FANS.
I agree with your assessment too but I feel the same what about some professional writers - some are awesome and some are crap. Buyer beware. ;)
I know, it's too bad that no one takes it seriously...besides us! I've shared fanfiction with a couple of my friends and now they think I'm a freakfan, which I am, but I didn't want everyone knowing that. ;)
Oh, definitely. A certain Stephanie Myers (or however you spell it, I don't care enough to look it up) comes to mind!
I can really relate what you wrote about people not taking your fanfiction seriously. My boyfriend always rolls his eyes whenever I find a new fandom, and start writing fic (or making icons, or making vids... I kinda go overboard). I don't even let him read my work >.But the way I see it, fanfic serves two important rolls
( ... )
I always make Mason read my work because he writes as well. He always says that I need to write my own fiction...he just doesn't understand the inspiration that comes with being a hardcore X-files fan.
1) It's a HOBBY. Everyone has things they do purely for enjoyment, right? Some people read, some people play video-games, some people go hiking. Well, I like to write fanfic. There's nothing wrong with a hobby.
I agree...and besides, there are way worse hobbies to have than writing fanfiction.
"While writing fanfiction will never get me anywhere as a professional author, [...]" Don't be so sure! Cassandra Clare started off as a Harry Potter fanfic author, but she got so popular and well known that a publishing company approached her about publishing some original works! Now she's a best-selling author! Ok, so maybe she's one in a million, but we can dream, right? ^__^
I know! Unfortunately when you write for a show that's been off the air for 8 years, there's probably not much chance for that.
