Possibly, or our greater knowledge, or the whole 'immortality' thing, *ignores the fact that he's been dead already* or possibly even jealousy because Elfs tend to be prettier then humans for the most part.

I try not to put too much responsibility on the shoulders of mortals...which includes the assumtions that they think about anything other than outward appearances.

So I think it's most definately the ears. Unless we're talking about women...or very, very effeminate men...who would be jealous of our etheral beauty.
