I had a great time today. Went to go see Hairspray with a bunch of friends. I laughed at all the non-funny lines(what else is new) and I went nuts annoying them with the differences between the movie and the show.
Good Morning Baltimore--Show, but only because I liked the sitcatto of the Oh oh oh in the show, I really liked this version though, loved the garbage truck.
The Nicest Kids in Town--Movie. I liked the movie version because of the things they were able to do with the camera that they can't do on a stage, like zoom in at Tracy's house and then zoom out at the studio. There were also more council members in the movie than there were in the show, but it makes sense, you can have more people on a movie set then you can on a stage.
(the legend of)Miss Baltimore Crabs--show. They missed the line, "when that damn Shirly temple stole my freakin act". They were working with everybody at the same time, they didn't get the question, "How many sweaters do you own?" "Well, I'm sure I've got plenty..." They changed that one a LOT. I didn't like it.
I Can Hear the Bells--Show. They didn't do the dream sequence in the movie. I loved how they did that song at the show and it was a little lost in the movie.
Ladies Choice--movie. I actually liked this song. I went in promising myself not to like anything Zac said, but I really did like this song.
Welcome to the 60's--toss up. I liked the show version, but I liked the movie version too.
Run and Tell That--Movie. They did the intro a little off, but I loved the moves to this song. I liked the transition to Motermouth Maybel's shop better in thew show, but I still like the movie version better over-all.
Big, Blonde, and Beautiful--SHOW! They changed this one sooo much and I don't like it at all. It was supposed to be where the protest was, but they didn't even have the protest until three songs later. I hated the reprise to this too, can you twist it any more? It was suposed to be about BIG, BLONDE, and beautiful women. Edna wasn't blonde in the movie and Velma was definatly not big. It didn't like how they twisted that one at all.
(You're) Timeless to Me--Show. They stuck to the original for this one, to the note. But I didn't like the fantasy dance bit and I really think the show version was funnier because of all the banter (for lack of a better word)that was in between the lines of the show version.
Without Love--Show! This was my favorite song, but since they didn't have Tracy in Jail it wasn't quite the same. Although, Seaweed breaking into Penny's room was still just as funny and "Was your mom in the navy? These knots are tough." But Link and the picture singing together? Awkward much? That was just odd.
I Know Where I've Been--Toss up. They changed it, so it had more meaning in the movie, but that took away from the meaning of Big, Blonde and Beautiful. It was alright, but not great. And I really liked the jazzy feel of the show one and I think that a little bit of that was lost in the movie.
(It's) Hairspray--movie, but it's a landslide.
You Can't Stop the Beat--Toss up! There were a couple jokes that were in the show that were missed in the movie version. But I'm coming to the decision that I like Penny's dress in the movie better and I liked Edna's part in the movie better too even though they missed a line ("Wilber be a dear, get me my oxygen, NOW!)
Songs they missed:
Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now--Grr.
It Takes Two--I'm okay
The Big Dollhouse--some of the best lines, some of the best parts in the whole show, how could they?
Cooties--They had the music but not the lyrics. I wish they had it.
Tracy--I loved Niki. She was great, it's great to see a new person in a somewhat familiar role, and I loved how she played it.
Link--Again, I came in promising not to like him, but when he said to the teacher, "Kiss my Ass" I almost died. It was hilarious. Zac played the character better than I expected.
Penny and Mrs. PIngleton--I loved Amanda in this role. She can sing! I also loved seeing Allison Janney. She was sooo funny. "Devil child, devil child, devil child." "You're going to meet a float of uglyiness in a whole parade of stupid"... "I see you've meet my mother" I laughed so hard I got weird looks from people.
Seaweed--I'll admit that I've never heard of Elijah Kelly before this, but I loved him in the part. I loved his move to introduce himself, it was so funny!
Amber and Mrs. Von Tussle--loved them! They were great together and they were great characters, wonderfully played. When Velma pulled out the votes from her bra I was all, "Oh, Busted."
Edna--John Travolta was good, but the part lost some of it's joke. It was supposed to be a joke that it was played by a guy, with Harvey Fierstein it was a drag queen joke.
Motermouth and Lil'Inez--I loved them both. Lil'Inez cracked me up. I loved how she won the pagent. I didn't even remember that it was different from the show until later.
Over-all a pretty good movie. I think I still like the show better, but part of that might be because I saw the show first. I liked the film version becasue of the things they did on camera that they wouldn't be able to do on a show. I think I'm always going to like live theater better than recorded movie, but that's probably because of the unpredictability of the performances live. The funny part now will be singing the songs with my friends, they'll all know the movie version and I've know the stage version for ages. I'm not changing my ways. Besides, I've got a couple songs on them that they don't even know.
