Er, well can't be certain I remember now (we are talking something like 1962), though as far as I know the record is with the other LP albums in Doncaster, so maybe nitoda could check, but I think it was Malcolm Sergeant: mind you in those days I could mostly only afford very cheap records (about 30 shillings each?) and some were just session conductors and orchestras.
It was definitely /much/ earlier than that: I used to play it on our /valve/ powered stereo player - the sort with one satellite speaker (even earlier in vintage than your mono Dansette). Maybe I did replace the LP when its condition became too bad.
I've tried to check out the discography on the net and I /think/ it may have been his performance with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, but I can't get an exact year for that. FWIW I also think it was (then) on the HMV label.
