What year is this?

Today I'm making bread from scratch, planning a vegetable garden, finishing my duct-tape-double dress-form, and starting to sew a linen suit from a 1948 Vogue pattern.

Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. Except I couldn't live without computers, modern birth-control, and synthesizers.

One thing I'm enjoying about being alive at this particular juncture of history is that you can cherry pick your favorite elements of so many past eras:

You can travel from ren-faire to ren-faire selling leather goods for a living, recreate a 17th century puritan village, re-enact the civil war, live in a hippie commune, go swing dancing, swordfight in the SCA, or find a worldwide community to help you fix up your '57 chevy. You can mix and match, or you can go hardcore Amish.

Not everything is represented yet - I haven't seen many people itching to recreate the culture of 1960's Uganda, for instance - but if all the cool
people in SF are getting their Jules Verne on every Saturday Night, it's just a matter of time.
