“It’s just us, Wes! Don’t get up!”

I’d crawled back into bed after Buffy had left. My mind more on the subject of trying to get oxygen into my lungs then anything else. Which was probably a good thing, otherwise I’d be imagining things. Such as that Buffy was probably not going to come back. Or that she was running away and using the whole Spike thing as an excuse. Or that she couldn’t handle watching the man she loved weak, which only pointed out how vulnerable I was compared to her.

It was rather an eye-opener wasn’t it? For me as much as her. I was weak, vulnerable, the less stronger one of us. She was a Slayer and I a mere human. A human who’s just had his throat slashed and was healing from that and got pneumonia instead.

The way to the bed was managed with great difficulty and once I arrived I let myself drop into it and didn’t move until I heard the voices downstairs. Confused, I shifted around, trying to figure out who was there. They’d had to have a key and my magical barrier hadn’t protested. Oh, Dawn. Narrowing my eyes, I listened even more carefully and heard the voices of Tara and Willow.

Buffy must’ve left then with Giles.

“I’ll make him some tea,” Tara’s soft voice wafted up the stairs. “I brought some herbs that should work. For the-the pneumonia and the…uh s-sore throat and stuff.”

There was the sound of someone working in the kitchen and the sound of footsteps. “I’ll help,” Willow said with obvious fondness in her voice She really must love this girl. That thought made me smile. “Oh, oh! We can like make some lunch. Cause Buffy would kill us if we didn’t feed Wes.”

Ugh. Food.

“I’m gonna go check on him,” Dawn said, which was followed by the sound of someone stomping up the stairs before I heard the door of the bedroom being flung open. There was a moment of silence before Dawn’s voice came again. “You’re like half outside the bed, Wes,” she sighed.

“I know,” I mumbled, finally shifting around a bit and *up* on the bed with Dawn’s help. “Didn’t have any energy left by the time I made it up here. Thank you.”

“You’re totally welcome. Buffy left.” She planted her hands on her hips in a way that look frighteningly familiar. “Tara’s making you some tea, which you will drink. And Willow’s making some lunch, which you will eat. And then we’re gonna keep you company till Buffy gets back from the whole slayage stitch.”
A frown creased my brow as I looked at her, scooting a bit further under the covers. “That’s not really needed. I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself, Dawn.”

She snorted, rolling her eyes in a way that reminded me of Buffy as well. “Yeah right. You couldn’t even get on the bed. I’m staying, Wes. Get used to it.”

Steamrollering all over me must be a summers trade. Good lord.

“Yes, Dawn,” I replied meekly, plucking the sheets of the bed.

“There see? Was that so hard? Now, why don’t you and me play a game of scrabble,” she continued enthusiastically, “while we wait for Willow and Tara to get up. *Then* we can totally have some tv marathon. I mean big bed and you got a tv with DVD here. What’s not to love?”

Yes. Quite. “When will Buffy be back?”

“Dunno,” she shrugged, putting up the board. “When she’s done, she said she’d call. So she’d better call right?”

“Yes, she’d better,” I agreed, eyeing the letters I’d gotten.

“Tea!” Tara announced, flouncing into the room with Willow on her trail. She carefully put it down, giving me a shy smile.

“And lunch. I made you something soft like, Wes. So you can swallow it.” Willow sat down on Dawn’s other side, while Tara kneeled on the side of the bed. “Ooh scrabble!” Willow grinned. “We can like team up?”

“Sure thing,” Dawn nodded. “Me and Wes against you and Tara. You’re so gonna be crushed. Right Wes?”

“Pulverized,” I agreed, smiling at the girls fondly. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad. I just wish Buffy were here instead though.
