Some Frugal thoughts for the New Year

I long ago quit trying to make, much less keep, New Years resolutions. Still, the period around New Years day is a good time to sit back and think about things in life that need to be done in order to be able to retire and move on with my life ( Read more... )

Years ago, when I was married, we got into tons of debt, as when my wife said we would only use credit cards in emergencies, her definition of them was totally different to mine. Make sure you know what your definition of an emergency is!! Also if your freezer isn't full, have you put empty boxes in there to stop you losing the chilled air when you take items out? Just a thought.

My definition of emergency is a pretty narrow one - use the cards only for something that cannot be delayed until cash is available. Things like car repairs, major appliance failures that impact being able to survive - ex. heating system failure in mid winter.

As for the freezer - its always near full. It and the pantry are my hedge against a lean month or two if/when an emergency strikes.
