(Right After school)
Liberty walked up the snowy stairs of her front porch and then opened the door to go inside. Usually her house seemed so warm and inviting, but today it seemed cold and dark. It foreshadowed the events that would take place next.
Liberty held her A+ math test in her hand, ready to show her mom. All her tutoring had finally payed off and her mom would be so proud. There was an eerie silence and her footsteps seemed to echo through the whole house. She walked through her kitchen and into the living room. Her mom was standing with her back toward her. She was looking out the window, staring at a cardinal in a tree in their yard.
"Mom, look at my math test. I got an A just like you said I would", she said, breaking the odd silence.
Her mother turned around and tears filled her eyes. "Liberty...sit down", her mother told her. An intense fear struck her. Nothing good ever came of "sit down".
Liberty breathed in deeply and could feel tears fill her eyes. She didn't even know what was wrong and yet this saddness overwhelmed her. "Mom, what is it?", Liberty squeaked.
After a few attempts to try to find the right words to say, her mother just said it...three short words that would ring in Liberty's ears: "I...am dying".
"What?" she asked, unable to believe it at first, "No, no, no, no, the doctor said you would be fi-"
"Liberty, I'm not fine. The doctor called today. He wanted me to come in to discuss the test results. The doctor's say my heart is slowing down every day and they're giving me less than 6 months to live."
A lump formed in Liberty's throat. It was the kind that wouldn't go away and the more you thought about it, the more it hurt.
"But...what about a heart transplant? Or another type of surgery? Isn't there something they can do?"
"Liberty, I should have told you this a long time ago. I've been dealing with heart problems my whole life and it's a miracle that I have been here as long as I have. It's a miracle I could find the man of my dreams who understood this. It's an even bigger miracle that I could have the two most beautiful children in the world."
Liberty's sadness turned to anger. She screamed the first thing that came to mind, "I HATE YOU!" She turned to run away. She stormed through the house and tore her math test into pieces. She heard her mom sobbing as she opened the front door.
Who am i angry with? she thought. My mom for giving up on her family and never telling me what was wrong? Or am I mad at myself for being so stupid and not even noticing her mom's problem? I just wanted to show her my stupid math grade. IT'S A LETTER. IT MEANS NOTHING. This whole time my mom was dying and all I wanted to do was get an A.
Liberty slammed the door on her way out and she ran down the stairs. She passed Danny and slightly turned her head to look at him as she wondered how he would take the news he was about to hear.
She started walking somewhere, anywhere, to take her mind off this.
