Does anyone remember when you needed a CODE to get an LJ?

It used to be kind of like the gmail invites. You had to be invited to start a livejournal. I believe it was something like (anyone feel free to correct me) a paid member was given 10 codes (invites) to hand out. My friend's friend bought a membership and gave MY friend three of the ten codes to hand out and I got one.
It was *so* much better then because there were hardly any trolls and people used the place for what it was meant to be and now you can see it's all like OMGMYFUCKINGSPACE!
I started this journal last year but I started my old one, ASortaJesus, back in 2003 with the code.

OHHH. That's interesting.

I had my first livejournal back in 2004 I think. Then I got a new one, but I don't remember that so it must have been earlier on.

I wasn't on LJ back then...I had a Deadjournal. Needed a code for that. Got one from a friend at uni. She didn't want me to sleep with her though :(
