So I've been gone for like 5 million years, but I came back to teach you guys how to make gifs.
What you'll need is GIMP and VLC or SM Player. I use SM Player cause I have better control of the screencaps.
Step 1: Open desired video with your VLC or SM Player and makes the screencaps.
As I mentioned above, I use SM Player which sends my screencaps into a self made folder so I don't clog up my photos.
Step 2: Open GIMP and select "Open as Layers"
After you click "Open as Layers" your pictures album should open up. If you use GIMP you can just click your ready made screencaps folder.
Step 3: Select the images you want to make a gif out of
Once you got your layers selected it should look like this:
Step 4: Resize your layer by clicking Image > Scale Image
Now if you want to add text on your gif all you have to do is click the text tool [The bold A] and select the font and color you wish to use.
After selecting that, click the image and the text box should pop up.Type in your text and when you're done, move the text however you see fit. HOWEVER, to avoid the text box popping up every move you make, just use your arrow keys to move the image up down, left and right.
Personally, I like to add a black bar behind the text to make it more legible. So before adding you text, you can make a new layer, make a selection box by clicking the "Rectangle Select Tool" in the toolbox on the left, and fill the box in with the "Bucket Tool".
Another thing I like to do is mess with the opacity of the box so that it isn't solid black. Again this is just what I like to do, you can do what you want.
Step 5: Merge the text and box together, then make duplicates of the two merged layers for each picture layer you have.
To merge the layers down, you must select the top layer [which was the font] and right click it to select "Merge Down". Your two layers will then merge together.
To make duplicates of the layer, you must select the "Duplicate" icon at the bottom of your Layers box.
I have 7 picture layers up, so I make 7 duplicates and put them above each layer.
After the text is now above each layer, merge the text down. Now each layer will have the text on it and will animate properly.
Step 6: Click File > Save As. After typing the name of the gif, choose where you want to save it [I always make sure it goes into my screencaps folder], then click "Select File Type (Gif image)" to save the file as a gif.
Step 7: Hit Save, then select "Save as animation" and click "Export".
If another box pops up asking if you want to crop the image, select crop, it won't affect the image.
Step 8: Saving the gif
Deselect the Gif comment, make sure the gif is looped forever, and set the delay to about 170-180 milliseconds. The frame delay decides the speed of your gif, so if you want it to be fast make the number low, if you want it slow make the number high. I usually keep it at 180 since it is at normal speed that way.
Now that you are done, you're gif should look like this:
FYI: If you plan on posting gifs on tumblr, you will need to make sure you have under 10 images to make up your gif OR you need to make sure the gif is below 500KB.
