I love this "controlled scruff" look:he's still got those luscious curls, but they're tamed into an actual hairstyle, and he's got that wonderful scruff, but it's trimmed and neat. The result? Worldwide swooning of epic proportions.

And, is it just me, or does he just seem more poised and mature now? As if having gotten so much steady work has give him a new confidence.

He's always seemed self-assured and mature to me, but perhaps even more so now. His interviews have always been very professional and mature, like the ones he gave for Parked. Even as he continues to look really young, he always seemed much wiser than his years.
I think the level of his discomfort becomes obvious when he knows/senses large amounts of fan energy directed at him. I am not surprised by this, given his antipathy towards celebrity culture. Also, I get the sense that he really enjoys the work he is doing now.

I agree that he had always given very thoughtful and mature interviews, however, he hasn't always seemed this comfortable in his skin. He had a tendency toward being shy during live Q&As, even as recently as a year ago with the Mojo Q&A. I'm glad to see him coming into his own a bit more in this respect.

Hmm. Yes, I would agree that today's press conference proves that he is learning to successfully navigate the more public demands of the profession. I have always felt, though, that he was very confident of himself and his abilities, which doesn't negate the fact that he seems a fairly reserved person. He just hadn't figured out how to translate that into his public persona, while still maintaining what is clearly, for him, a pretty strict divide between the public and private. I think leaving Merlin behind has been pretty important to that aspect of professional evolution. All of which is to say is that I agree with you.
