Dodged a bullet and hit by an avalanche

Well today was interesting... I found out that a coworker in a different office is leaving and the division has decided not to hire anyone to replace him. It turns out they were looking reduce the number of employees in our offices anyway so I probably avoided getting laid off by his voluntary departure. Ah yes. The double-work/single-pay function of so many office jobs these days. I feel for you. Been there myself. :(

Ouch! Welcome to the New Economy. Although during a recession 'tis better to have too much work as opposed to no work. Hang in there!

Happened to me too. I was young and eager to please, and the work was technically challenging so even though I wasn't getting a raise, my low salary saw me survive 7 layoffs and the stuff I learned was absolutely awesome. You're in a totally different thing, but I can hope the stuff they have you doing is not totally boring!

Is there a chance that portions of the work done by the person that left being assigned to multiple people instead of just you?
Best of luck with how everything goes in the long-run. That's the part that matters.
