His back is towards you, figure languid and legs swinging above the glint of the water. The sky paints a dark canvas above his head, the slosh of water against the harbor rhythmic with his soft singing, syllables slurred into quiet whispers and the rush of cars behind you. Carefully, you step forward, elbows moving to rest and slip against the cold metal railing of the bridge, wind ruffling the fabric of your jacket.
Startled, he turns. His eyes smile when they see you, lips sweeping into a swift curve before he slides over closer to meet the brush of your touch. He lets you curl idle fingers around the belt loops of his jeans, tugging until he squirms and breaks out of his singing to wrinkle his nose at you. “You’re going to make me fall,” he informs you, without a hint of malice, and you laugh, your free hand reaching up to swipe the hair out of his eyes.
“That wouldn’t be good. Then I’d have to fall too,” you remark, quirking your lips at his confused blink. “It’s my duty to follow you everywhere.”
With a short burst of laughter, he grins at you, all bright teeth and eyes crinkling at the corners. “I followed you here,” he reminds you, kicking his jean-clad legs up into the crisp night air. You follow the point of his toe with your eyes, throwing your head back to gaze at the up-and-down pattern of the city buildings, winking lights just beyond the trace of your fingertips. “U-Kiss,” he murmurs beside you with an extravagant gesture, his hand fluttering, scattering imaginary kisses into the cool water below. “Think we’ll make it big, hyung?”
You flick your eyes down towards the water, the break of reflections over the surface, your two figures illuminated in ripples of streetlight. Without answering, you wrap an arm around his waist, squeezing tight until he fakes a gasp for air and rewards you with pealing laughter, letting you finally tug him down from his precarious position on the railing. He’s warm in your arms as you draw both your arms around him, rocking back and forth playfully. When he stops fidgeting, you lower the point of your chin onto the smoothness of his shoulder blade, strands of your dark hair curling, meshing with his, your breath lingering in his ear.
(We’ll be the best, you never tell him, locked in your embrace, hushed words in your heart. You and me, together.)
