Why this is, no one can technically know, but I think it has a lot to do with how crazy her ego has gotten as time has gone on...not unlike LKH.
I think that's definitely a huge part of it. I also wonder if exhaustion has something to do with it. You go on for so long, writing the same kinds of books, spending all your time immersed in the same atmosphere without the refreshment of truly different ideas and people, and that leads to burnout. Which leads to hack writing. I think this is a real danger for any genre writer. Imo, one reason Agatha Christie was able to keep the quality of her work high for her whole life was that she wrote traditional romance as well as mystery.
