From somewhere Mrs. Who's glasses glimmered and they heard a voice. "Calvin," she said "a hint. For you a hint. Listen well ( Read more... )

It might have been more than a coincidence that Carrie was coming back from the beach just then, sandals in one hand. She'd decided that she liked walking barefoot. Momma had always said things when she wanted to do something as simple was walk around the house barefoot.

She always had rules that Carrie never completely understood.

As she neared the compound, she saw Calvin sitting on the compoud steps. She still felt those same butterflies in her stomach whenever she saw him, but it wasn't something completely unpleasant, only unfamiliar.

"Hi, Calvin." She said, approaching him.

"Into a cloven pine, within which he..." Calvin trailed off as he heard someone coming up to the steps. At the sound of his name he glanced up, blushed when he saw Carrie. Something twisted inside him as she came up to him, nerves and giddiness and embarrassment all at once.

He'd never, properly, asked anyone to go on a date before. It hadn't been like that with Meg, no real courtship. Calvin was starting to realize he might be awful at it.

"Hello," he said, smiling at her. "How're you?"

Carrie smiled back at Calvin. She was feeling very good at the moment. "I'm good. It's really nice out here." She tentatively closed the distance between them.

"Am I bothering you?" She'd noticed the book in his hand and didn't want to disturb him. Calvin was always reading. Sometimes it made Carrie feel a little stupid-- she'd always been an average student- sometimes even a little below average.

"It is. All this autumn sunshine makes for a nice change," he said, getting to his feet as Carrie walked over to the steps. He was rather suddenly standing closer to her than she expected, a rush of that feeling again, giddy and nervous. Clearing his throat awkwardly and ducking his head, he stepped down off the step, not so close but not farther away either.

He didn't know when he'd started acting like a 13 year old when it came to girls, well, just when it came to Carrie. Calvin didn't like it though.

He shook his head, smiling at her."Of course not. You're never bothering me." He held the book out so she could see the title. "The bookshelf's being nicer to me."
