Take the time to read this. Srsly.

Hope this entry finds everyone is good health and spirits at the beginning of this year, 2006. Just thought I'd stand up on my Lever 2000 soap box for a second...

Back in October last, under severe peer (and by peer I mean pseudo-midlife) pressure (and by pressure I mean ( Read more... )

As a survivor of 2 car accidents in a year...I whole-heartedly agree!

And yes, try to post more often. These days, it's slim pickins'; I got nothing to procrastinate with!

Glad you weren't seriously hurt in either...
What was the cause of both accidents?

1st: light snow combined with bad brakes on a 1988 Aries K = car swerved onto shoulder and flipped over. I was driving pretty slowly so although everyone thought it was my fault, I don't think I did anything wrong!

2nd: a Fung Wah van 2 spots behind me hit the car in front of him, which then hit me. The passengers in the van said the driver was fiddling with the air conditioner/radio and didn't notice that the car in front of him had slowed down.

i hear you, but remember - some riders that get injured/killed do some dumb shit, too; lane-splitting, cutting people off in tight spots, trying to do tricks/stunts on roadways. this isn't directed toward you at all, but for real, some riders are idiots.

but i whole-heartedly agree with you about the way people drive. i swear to christ, if talking on cellphones while driving isn't punished, i'm going to become a bat-wielding vigilante in the near future.

Definitely. Just like there are dumb drivers, there are also dumbass bikers. Doing stunts on public roads is probably at the top of that list. I remember seeing a group doing wheelies across GWB. Looked cool, but one F' up and its a plummet of doom off the bridge that awaits. Being a danger to others is what takes the cake tho ( ... )

Seemed like the biker should've slowed down in that case. But the point gets across.

i just got to watch the vid now (home computer sucks), but that rider was doing nothing wrong. that guy had the stop; the rider had the right-of-way.

i just think the end of it is funny. "take longer to look for bikes." "also, take longer to look for the elderly, squirrels, woodchucks, snakes, invisible swordsmen, ninjas and airplanes that may be making emergency landings on local roadways."

The guy came to a full stop. That biker seemed like he came out of nowhere.

Nope. Point is, drivers don't look carefully enough for bikes coming down the road. Bike was going normal speed. Car pulls out in front of bike. BAM.
You know how people pull out in front of you while driving even after they've stopped and in turn makes you jam on your brakes? Same thing.

Most common accident between bikes and cars are cars making left turns at intersections. If the driver isn't checking careful enough or mis-judging the speed of a bike and trying to pull off a quick turn, whammo.
