Webcomicing seems to be a profitable thing. It would be a good habit to keep as it'll enforce schedule on me that isn't just school/family nagging. It'd force me to work on images that are intended to stay together, possibly solidifying separate styles.
It'd generate an audience, I've seen so from RBN with

Joslyn and Elananin would at best be slice-of-life, but their lives are pretty ordinary. Jos is a physical therapist for a living while Ela is a stay-at-home interior designer. Not much action to keep an audience curious or interested.
Battery's world did have some interesting ideas, but barely defined. I didn't think to include her. It would probably have some appeal to the 'kinda sci-fi' audience and not be all-furry all the time. Though, that hits the inexperience with humans hard.
The Gunman characters are half-designed to fit in with Slate's universe. It would be an interesting read, most likely. I'll have to think over that one s'more. Space mercenaries is a pretty easy tagline to sell. A blend of human and anthro may be easier to sell, and it'll look better than that ( ... )

The real thing here though is that you won't figure any of that out by not trying. I'm starting mine up in a month; you think I have it down to a science yet? I eventually decided one day that I'll probably have to figure a lot of the art of webcomickry out on my own as I go along.
What counts is not setting goals too high if you want to get into it. Profitable webcomics are an exception more than the rule. At least, WELL-profiting ones. Start low and build upwards, and worry about things as they come along!
Worst case scenario, after a year you probably have a really good running portfolio going. Best case scenario, you don't NEED the portfolio.
There's nothing to lose if you already have the free time to make it! Just throw some comics up and advertise a little, and see what happens. As I understand, xkcd started as just a few random scans thrown on some random server!

Welcome to my world. I've got storylines galore, but I'm real ADD with them - it doesn't help that I imagine all of my characters existing in some massive continuity/universe stretching across 25,000 years of human history (no aliens, they're too much of a pain in the ass to write). It's pretty hard when you're all: "Oh, wait, Character X could be Character Y's grandfather!" every other second.
As for writing... maybe I could help you out a bit? I've got quite a bit of time now that I'm out of school. What exactly do you have to work with, etc?
