Luna set down the glass and reached for her father’s hand. It was dry and shaking. His veins bulged, greenish rivers flowing up and down his arms. She wondered if you noticed these things when they happened to you.
“Shouldn’t you be on your honeymoon?” her father asked. He could only turn his head to look at her, he was so weak now.
Luna smiled and squeezed his hand gently. “My honeymoon can wait, Daddy.”
He closed his eyes, and she knew that was the only thing he’d say for a while until he mustered up the strength again.
Her father was dying.
The Healers said it was cancer, rare for a wizard, and Hermione had told Luna what it was. It sounded quite terrifying, eaten from the inside by your own flesh. He was given only a month or two left. But his expiration date had come and gone, and he still clung to life.
“I’m so glad I saw you marry Rolf, Luna,” he murmured. “Your mother...she…”
It dawned slowly on Luna that he was letting go now. He’d fought and fought to see her married, to make sure she’d live a happy life, and now he was letting go.
“You’ll be seeing her soon, Daddy,” Luna reassured him. “When you leave me, you’ll see Mum again, and both of you can watch after Rolf and me.” She knew it deep in heart that she was telling the truth, which was why her eyes stayed dry. He was leaving her, but he would be reunited with Mum. And where he went, there was no cancer to give him pain.
She would miss him. She would miss his guidance and steady faith in what he believed to be true. But she was confident they’d see each other again.
