“Goodbye, sun,” she whispered, watching as the sun began to disappear below the trees of the Forbidden Forest. She’d only been at Hogwarts for a few months, and already she was itching to search the forest for Blubbering Humdingers or Crumple-Horned Snorkacks in the Forest. You never knew where you’d find them, after all.

But she’d heard Professor Dumbledore’s warning and knew she wasn’t ready to go in, at least not yet.

“Oh, my,” she breathed, leaning forward to get a better look. Strange creatures were emerging from the forest, impossibly large horses with leathery wings.

It took her only minutes to hurry down the staircases and out the front doors. Only then, when she stood on the steps in complete wonder at the scene before her, did she ask herself if she should be scared.

She decided not.

Even though they had shifty red eyes with bodies made of bones and blackened muscle and she barely came up to their bellies, she decided she didn’t want to be scared.

She was too curious.

She crept cautiously to the nearest horse. Her father always said that honesty was best, so she looked straight at it and tried not to act threatening.

They watched her for a minute, but when she was close enough to reach out a hand and touch one, they bolted, soaring off into the sky.

Suddenly, Hagrid came running out of his house over to her. “What are yeh doing out here this late?”

She ignored his question. “What were those creatures?”

“Thestrals,” he told her. “Yeh can see ‘em?” She nodded, and he looked sad. “Sorry ‘bout that.”

When she finally understood, she wasn’t sorry, not if it meant she could watch the thestrals every night when she could sleep because she missed her mother.
