Road woes

Susan and I started off early Thursday morning, finally heading for Tombstone. We didn’t get far. At least not at first; before we even made it to the highway, our personal vehicle had a flat tire.

Honestly, it happening that quickly worked to our benefit; there was a tire shop less than two miles away, and they got someone there to get the car jacked up and the spare installed. (I can’t even begin to guess how many tires I’ve changed in my life, but I couldn’t locate the lift point underneath our car, and my first attempt produced a sound that made me worry I’d crack one of the panels.) The guys that helped us were with a small outfit, and said they’d have to order a replacement tire; I paid them extra for the assistance they’d provided, and Susan and I went to an alternative shop they recommended, a giant center with a couple of dozen employees. We waited in comfort while the work was done; once we were able to head out again, we were three hours behind schedule.

It worked out. Wickenburg to Tombstone was about an hour farther than our normal driving day, but we pushed through with fewer stops, and arrived half an hour before the office closed. Settled in, ready to explore Tombstone first thing in the morning.

With the window repair Wednesday, and replacing tires today - all four, to get ahead of other misfortunes - we spent over $1,500 just to make it out of Wickenburg. Good thing our fortunes have steadily improved lately.

We started off in November with the intention of wintering in Tombstone. Can’t believe it took us so long to make it this far.
