I just got an update from my father about the damage Hurricane Irene did to PA. Now it's all well and good that NY And NC and Puerto Rico have been declared disaster areas. I'm not denying that they deserve it and need relief! But you know PA isn't going to get that level of Federal Aid

Individual states can declare areas disasters, too; it isn't always on a federal level, and it'll allow for money to be put towards clean-up and tax breaks for people affected by the damage come next filing time.

There was a bad tornado through this area last year and that county was declared a disaster area by the State of Michigan so that business and individuals can file for assistance.

Have your family check with their state representative.

That sucks! I'm sorry to hear that. From what I've heard (this could be completely wrong, by the by), you can't even get flood insurance unless you're in a designated flood zone. Even if you want to pay some exorbitant fee. So the insurance companies totally fuck people over even more, especially when it comes to situations like this.

Things like this take a long time to recover from but I wish your family and their neighbors/friends the best.
