Indymedia: Is this a foundation of modern internet culture?

The effort and collaboration of the IMC on the Indymedia.org Web site I feel is a grandfather to the modern era of user-controlled entertainment and information availability and dispersal.

Most of if not all the elements seen in a site such as Youtube, MySpace, Limewire, Napster, and newsgroups has its roots in a project like Indymedia.org.

I agree that sites like YouTube give fans a way to express themselves. And I believe that people use these sites more to promote themselves rather than watch copyright protected material, which is what the of media companies claim. These types of sites are loved by fans and hated by the general media. However they are necessary for people to be able to com up with their own content. These sites are slowly decreasing the dependence on media companies and giving new power to the individual.
