Since I have accumulated a backlog of NYC pics here - some of which I already resized and uploaded, some of which are still on my camera, even! - I thought maybe I'd go ahead and finally get around to doing another piccie post...so here goes!
The following pics are ones I took several weeks ago, and ended up not posting because I found out I hadn't made it into BHT (sigh), which led me down serious depression lane again...but they're rather beautiful (I think) and deserve to get seen at last, by somebody other than me anyway! I had a lovely morning when they were taken actually; I met up with an online friend for the first time, Miranda (Sajdak), a Brooklynite who's recently relocated to LA (right b4 I came here, dangit!) and who was back in town just for a few days. She suggested we meet at the Hungarian Pastry Shop on the Upper West Side (er, Morningside Heights, West Harlem, whateva, Columbia area!) for coffee, across from the gorgeous old St. John cathedral...and I am a sucker for both cute little old-school cafe's and lofty cathedrals! Naturally I had to snap some pix.
This funky sculpture in the garden next to the cathedral was certainly intriguing and a bit baffling...I still don't really know what's going on here. :)
Cathedral! (And funky sculpture again...)
And another view...um, is that a giraffe in there, or something?
Despite not being a Christian, I have always appreciated beautiful old cathedrals, they always take me back to Europe...sigh, I miss Europe.
This was in the area between the sculpture and the cathedral...
The famous Hungarian Pastry Shop! Apparently featured in loads of movies, so now I need to look out for it; I know it's in some Woody Allen flicks. Sadly, I didn't actually manage to try any of their impressive pastries at the time, could only afford a coffee. (And be warned, they don't take credit cards, and their prices are not actually listed on the menu boards, you have to ask!)
Looking at the steps to the cathedral entrance.
I love that there are things like this in NYC, you know?
I did venture inside briefly, of course...and had to attempt to capture some of the glorious stained-glass windows!
One of my favorite things about churches and cathedrals? All the candles.
The inside of the Hungarian Pastry Shop, with all of its stereotypically artsy, academic ambience (definite Columbia student/faculty hangout!).
Someday I MUST go back for the pastries!! ;) Btw, I had the Hungarian coffee, which was okay, I forget now what was in it...
Miranda poses for the camera. :) And she's just as rad as I imagined her to be! Pity that she had to leave NY just before I got here, doh!!
And on a completely unrelated note, here's a snap I took yesterday with the iSight to document what my lacerated (left ring) finger looks like now - although it's kinda blurry with the cam...sigh. I keep it bandaged still, and pray it doesn't scar too much. :(
On the life-update front, a few things:
- Tomorrow I've got to return to Planned Parenthood in the Bronx for the results of my colposcopy (well, the three biopsies)...here's hoping for the best!!
- Tomorrow I also have a job interview, for the Araca Group (the theatrical management company that does "Wicked," among other shows)! Tis for an internship, and it's a spring one so not till Dec or Jan I think...also dunno yet what their "small stipend" might be, so, I dunno if it'd even be something I could really afford to do, but hey, I'm not gonna miss the opportunity to interview with Araca!! I pray that something might come of it... *fingers crossed*
- I won two tickets from Joe's Pub, for the Jill Sobule concert there this Sat night, wahoo!! :D I'd entered their contest for free tix to their various anniversary shows this weekend; I didn't win tix for the cast of "Hair" be-in show, alas, but they did say they're gonna do standby tix, hmm...anyway, at first the site said I'd won tix for the "Stew Songbook" show, with John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Cerveris among others, which was surprising cuz I thought I hadn't picked that one among my choices for entering? But it turned out JP had made a mistake and screwed up the random drawing for everyone, so they redid it, and I got Jill. Which I'm pretty happy about, cuz I love JCM and Michael, but dunno if I like the music of Stew, and I reeally wanted to see Jill again cuz it's been YEEARS since I saw/met her at the Ark (like, back in the late 90's I think?!). And I asked
charmedgirl along cuz I know she likes Jill too (and has never seen her live!), so yay. She's a Jill as well, lol.
- I lurve my new cable OnDemand, which has allowed me to catch up on all of Season 4 of "Weeds" (woo!), the season of "True Blood" thus far (I am officially addicted!!), and even see all of Season 1 (just 8 eps) of "The Secret Diary of a Call Girl" or whatever it's called (not as good as the book it's based on, imho, by the infamous "Belle de Jour"). Next on my agenda will be Season 2 of "The Tudors," yaay!! Maybe one of these days I can even finally check out "Californication" or "Dexter" for the first time...oddly, however, they don't seem to have any "L Word" reruns on Showtime OnDemand, wtf?? (Or "Big Love" on HBO OnDemand?)
- I am finally, officially, in the NYC voter registration database, and got my confirmation in the mail and everything. I cannot WAIT to get my first chance to vote for Obama (since he wasn't on the ticket in the MI primaries) next month!! I have Obama and Obama/Biden stickers all over my room right now; I'd have a lawn sign up somewhere if only I had a place for one...gonna watch the debate tonight, although I dunno if it'll be quite as fun without Caribou Barbie bringing the crazy...I missed the first Obama/McCain debate, alas! (Not sure if I even had TV then?)
ETA: Oh, and re: my previous entry? I ended up going to the second of the two readings on Fri night, at Bluestockings, and also ended up fainting in the middle of it (and hitting my forehead, between the eyes, on a bookshelf as I went down. :( I still have a small bruise/bump), ughh, so embarrassing!! I prolly shoulda gone to the kundalini one, lol...oh well. Now I'm gonna feel like a dork going to Bluestockings again, just like I did going to Shaman Drum after having fainted (and also hit my head!) during their Fast Food Nation reading...
